This summer marked the triumphant return of the University of Wisconsin\u2013Superior\u2019s Road Scholar program after a ten-year hiatus. Organized by the\u00a0Center for Continuing Education<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 which provides community education programs for lifelong learners \u2013 the revived program focused on exploring the natural and cultural heritage of Lake Superior.<\/p>\n

Titled \u201cA Superior Exploration: Lake Superior\u2019s History & Ecology<\/a>,\u201d the program offered participants an immersive adventure through northern Wisconsin\u2019s natural wonders. From geological formations to Indigenous history, the experience provided a deep dive into the ecology and human connections to the greatest of the Great Lakes.<\/p>\n

The first of four sessions began on June 21 with 19 participants. The final session ran from August 16 through August 21, welcoming 29 individuals. Over six days and five nights, participants enjoy 12 meals and take part in 10 expert-led field trips. Topics ranged from Lake Superior\u2019s glacial and tectonic geology to its ecological significance and the history of its Indigenous peoples.<\/p>\n

Participants explore the region\u2019s rich natural history with visits to Amnicon Falls State Park, Pattison State Park and Jay Cooke State Park, guided by local faculty and park experts. The program also features engaging presentations from a local tribal historian and a tribal environmental scientist, deepening the understanding of Indigenous perspectives.<\/p>\n

Hands-on experiences include identify aquatic life, canoeing the Brule River, and hiking through scenic landscapes \u2013 all designed to blend education with adventure.<\/p>\n

Participants have praised the program\u2019s thoughtful planning, knowledgeable presenters and smooth organization.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, the Center for Continuing Education already has\u00a0Road Scholar<\/a>\u00a0dates set for both 2025 and 2026.<\/p>\n
