Schilling \u201982, aimed at expanding access to STEM degrees for high-achieving students with financial need. The newly established \u201cDr. Charles Ihrke\u00a0Scholarship Fund\u201d will support incoming undergraduate students pursuing STEM majors\u2014empowering the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers and community leaders.<\/p>\n<p>This extraordinary gift is more than a scholarship\u2014it\u2019s a tribute to the power of mentorship and a bold investment in the future of Northeast Wisconsin. Dr. Schilling created the scholarship to honor his former faculty advisor,\u00a0Professor Emeritus Dr. Charles \u201cChuck\u201d Ihrke, whose guidance helped shape his academic and professional journey. Dr. Ihrke, a founding faculty member in Human Biology at UW-Green Bay, was known for his unwavering dedication to students and was recognized with the university\u2019s Founders Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1984.<\/p>\n<p>With college costs top of mind for many families, this four-year renewable $5,000 scholarship offers financial support and stability. When paired with UW-Green Bay\u2019s academics, hands-on learning opportunities and undergraduate research options, it makes earning a STEM degree more accessible and affordable, allowing students to stay focused on learning and preparing for their careers.<\/p>\n<h3>Empowering the Next Generation of STEM Leaders<\/h3>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/emp\/tables\/stem-employment.htm\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>, STEM careers are projected to grow by 8% in the next nine years throughout the U.S. At UW\u2013Green Bay, where more than half of students are\u00a0First Generation, this scholarship has the power to change lives. \u201cThe impact of this gift for our students cannot be understated,\u201d said UW-Green Bay Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Kate Burns. \u201cAs an access institution, this gift not only highlights the incredible impact the UW-Green Bay faculty have on their students but will be life-changing for those who receive it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-163122\" src=\"https:\/\/news.uwgb.edu\/files\/2025\/11\/Scholarship-Announcement-10-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"Dr. Ihrke smiles as Dr. Schilling speaks about his experience at UWGB\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Dr. Paul Schilling honors long-time UW-Green Bay Professor Charles Ihrke with a transformative $1 million scholarship gift. Photo by Dan Moore, University Photographer<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The scholarship will be awarded to incoming full-time undergraduate students who meet the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Must be a\u00a0U.S. citizen or U.S. national<\/li>\n<li>Must be majoring in a\u00a0STEM discipline, including (but not limited to): human biology, biology, chemistry, environmental science, geoscience, water science, computer science, engineering, engineering technology, or mathematics and statistics<\/li>\n<li>Must have a\u00a0minimum high school GPA of 3.3\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For renewal (up to four years), recipients must maintain a\u00a0minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3\u00a0at UW-Green Bay<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Preference will be given to students with the greatest financial need, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After financial need is assessed, scholarships will be awarded based on\u00a0academic merit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This scholarship is designed to remove financial barriers and empower students to pursue rigorous STEM degrees that are critical to solving tomorrow\u2019s challenges that benefit both them and the region. The first scholarships will be awarded to students enrolling in Fall 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Prospective students can explore eligible STEM majors, apply for admission and connect with an admissions counselor at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwgb.edu\/apply\/\">uwgb.edu\/apply<\/a>.\u00a0After admission, students must submit a separate scholarship application through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwgb.edu\/scholarships\/\">general scholarship application<\/a>. For maximum consideration, all scholarship application materials should be submitted by\u00a0<strong>February 15, 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>A Legacy of Gratitude and Growth<\/h3>\n<p>Dr. Schilling\u2019s gift reflects the spirit of UW-Green Bay\u2014where mentorship, academic excellence and community impact go hand in hand. It also reinforces the university\u2019s commitment to increasing access to STEM education for students from all backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are deeply grateful to Dr. Schilling for his generosity and vision,\u201d said UW-Green Bay Chancellor Michael Alexander. \u201cThis scholarship honors a beloved professor and opens doors for students who will shape the future of science and technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Paul J. Schilling\u00a0is a board-certified radiation oncologist with more than three decades of experience in cancer treatment and research. A native of Cincinnati, he earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in Human Biology, magna cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin\u2013Green Bay before completing his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine and residency at Hahnemann University Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Schilling has held leadership roles with the American College of Radiation Oncology and the American Cancer Society, earning honors such as the Gold Medal from the American College of Radiation Oncology and the Hope Award from the American Cancer Society. His contributions include numerous publications, book chapters, and service on ethics and safety committees. Dr. Schilling is recognized nationally for advancing oncology practices and patient care excellence.<\/p>\n<p>UW-Green Bay Associate Professor Emeritus Dr. Charles Ihrke earned his B.S. in biology and history from UW-Oshkosh, an M.S. in biology from the University of Omaha, and a Ph.D. in genetics and botany from Oregon State University. Joining UW-Green Bay in 1969, he taught courses ranging from introductory biology to advanced genetics and developed one of the Midwest\u2019s first interdisciplinary undergraduate courses in human genetics. Over a 30-year career, Dr. Ihrke served as chair of Biology and Human Biology, faculty representative to the NCAA, and chaired key university committees, including the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee and Prior Learning Council. Honored with the UW-Green Bay Founder\u2019s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1984, he was widely praised by students for his clarity, patience and commitment to high standards.
