Although the University of Wisconsin-Superior is five hours from his hometown of Green Bay, JD Glampe has already found a place that feels like home. The university offers the perfect blend of academics and athletics, giving him the opportunity to pursue both his educational goals and passion for golf.<\/p>\n

Glampe has been playing golf since the eighth grade, and joining the\u00a0Yellowjackets men\u2019s golf team<\/a>\u00a0has allowed him to continue competing at a high level. But golf isn\u2019t the only thing that drew him to UW-Superior. He\u2019s also exploring an academic path that runs in his family and enjoying the natural surroundings \u2013 especially the proximity to Lake Superior, which has quickly become one of his favorite parts of college life.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy favorite thing about UWS \u2013 outside of golf \u2013 would be Lake Superior, for sure,\u201d Glampe said. \u201cRecently, we went to the beach as a team and hung out, which was fun. I like fishing, I like the water, so being this close to Lake Superior is perfect for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Familiar territory far from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Though UW-Superior is a few hours from Green Bay, Glampe was already familiar with the area thanks to family connections and frequent visits.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe come through this area a lot when we go to Canada for fishing trips,\u201d he said. \u201cMy grandma doesn\u2019t live too far from here, so I\u2019ve always been up around Superior.\u201d<\/p>\n

When visiting colleges, Glampe was immediately drawn to the size and layout of UW-Superior.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis campus is more secluded, and I really liked that aspect of it,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s why I chose it, for sure. The campus isn\u2019t too big. I\u2019m not a big-campus kind of person. I visited a few larger schools and just wasn\u2019t a fan. I really liked how everything here is all in one area.\u201d<\/p>\n

Exploring a family tradition in criminal justice<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Although Glampe started college undecided on a major, he soon gravitated toward\u00a0criminal justice<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a field that runs in the family.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy parents both studied criminal justice, so I\u2019ve been around it for a while,\u201d he said. \u201cEarly on, I didn\u2019t want to do that at all. But as I\u2019ve gotten older, I\u2019ve started to really like the criminal justice side of things.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the biggest highlights of Glampe\u2019s experience so far has been the sense of community on campus \u2013 especially with the golf team.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe guys on the team are super helpful,\u201d he said. \u201cIf I have any questions, they\u2019re always there. Coach\u00a0Paul Eberhardt<\/a>\u00a0is the same way. I know I can ask him pretty much anything \u2013 he\u2019s always there for me, which is nice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking ahead to the UMAC Tournament<\/strong><\/h3>\n

On the course, Glampe continues to improve his game with the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) tournament in October as a major goal. But for him, golf is just as much about relationships as it is about competition.<\/p>\n

\u201cMeeting all the new people throughout the season is what I enjoy the most,\u201d he said. \u201cEven when we play the same conference schools, you still meet new people. It\u2019s great getting to know everyone and seeing what they\u2019re like.\u201d<\/p>\n
