Details are provided in the <span class=\"doc-icon\"><a class=\"doc-type pdf\" href=\"https:\/\/wwwtest.wisconsin.edu\/math-initiative\/download\/MI-June-2020-workshop-agenda-final-5.27.20.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">agenda.<span class=\"sr-only\"> pdf<\/span><\/a><\/span>\r\n<\/p>\n<p>Sessions were recorded and resources saved for those who choose to <a href=\"https:\/\/uws-td.instructure.com\/enroll\/846KPD\">&#8220;enroll&#8221;<\/a> after June 11.<\/p>\n<p>UW System Math Initiative Project Director Alice Pulvermacher sent invitations to this Canvas course to mathematics faculty and instructors identified by Institutional Change Team leaders. Please direct questions to her at <a href=\"mailto:apulvermacher@uwsa.edu\">apulvermacher@uwsa.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The co-req series of four virtual sessions met via Canvas Collaborate Ultra from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 2 to 11. Participants also were expected to join an afternoon sessions: the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwtest.wisconsin.edu\/math-initiative\/event\/june-professional-development-workshop-plenary\/\">June 1 plenary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Co-req track objectives:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Review possible structures for co-requisite instruction<\/li>\n<li>Create outlines for co-requisite course to provide just in time support with a lens on equity<\/li>\n<li>Explore resources and develop equity-minded instruction materials\/support for co-requisite course\/s<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Presenters (see video introductions in Canvas course):<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Kate Burns<\/li>\n<li>Hayley Nathan<\/li>\n<li>Kelly Kohlmetz<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Schedule:<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Co-req session 1,<\/strong><strong> Tuesday, June 2, 10-11:30 a.m.: Discuss Possible Structures for Co-requisite Courses<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Focus:<\/strong> Hayley Nathan (College Algebra: CA), Kelly Kohlmetz (Quantitative Reasoning: QR), and Kate Burns (Statistics: Stats) will present a summary of the models\/structures that UW institutions are using for co-requisite courses and review the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwtest.wisconsin.edu\/math-initiative\/download\/UW-fundamental-features_1.10.20.pdf\">UW System Fundamental Features of\u00a0 Co-requisite Developmental Math<\/a> agreed on by the Math Steering Committee.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify strengths and weaknesses of different models\n<ul>\n<li>How does the model\/structure impact the students?<\/li>\n<li>Does one model\/structure provide better opportunities to support equity in the classroom?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Consider whether and how the model\/structure matters for CA, QR and Stats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Co-req session 2,<\/strong><strong> Thursday, June 4, 10-11:30 a.m.:<\/strong><strong> Principles to Provide Just-in-Time Support in Co-requisite Courses<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Focus: <\/strong>Hayley Nathan (CA), Kelly Kohlmetz (QR), and Kate Burns (Stats) will discuss principles that guide their co-requisite course instruction. They will share lessons they\u2019ve learned along the way and the impact this has on students. They will describe how to approach this work with an equity-minded lens.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider steps to guide development of co-requisite course<\/li>\n<li>Engage in small group work by each course. Participants should plan to bring syllabi (or drafts) for gateway and pre-req courses to walk through how to unpack the pre-req course and organize material for just-in-time support, including test taking, math anxiety, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Co-req session 3, Tuesday, June 9, 10-11:30 a.m.: Backwards Mapping for Equitable Course Design<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Focus:<\/strong> Hayley Nathan (CA), Kelly Kohlmetz (QR), and Kate Burns (Stats) will present an eight-step framework and continuous process for equitable course design.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Continue to work on backwards design course mappings with a focus on math and equity practices<\/li>\n<li>Address next steps in the co-requisite design process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Co-req session 4: Thursday, June 11, 10-11:30 a.m.: <\/strong><strong>Key Strategies to Build Online Gateway Co-Requisite Courses<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Focus: <\/strong>Hayley Nathan (CA), Kelly Kohlmetz (QR), and Kate Burns (Stats) will present strategies to support student success with online co-requisite courses. They will share lessons learned, considering both perspectives of planning an online or hybrid course in advance as well as transitioning a course from face-to-face to online or hybrid.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Discuss strategies to support student success in online or hybrid courses with an eye on equity<\/li>\n<li>Work in small groups to draft co-requisite course materials that are a good fit for the remote learning environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Co-requisite Development series was part of the Math Initiative June 1-11 Professional Development Workshop.
